BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN 2 PS1 LONGBOX BRAND NEW, SEALED! Title: Battle Arena Toshinden 2 Publisher: PlayMates Genre/Category: Fighting-Head-to-Head System: PS One Console, PlayStation 2 System Number of Players: 1-2 Release Date: 05/96 Compatible Peripheral Feature: Description: Welcome... to another dimension. To another world where conventional rules no longer exist. Welcome to .. the Fighting Game Zone. Because, let's face it, three quarters of all fighting games just chuck the laws of physics and gravity out of the window. Take Mortal Kombat for instance - you've got characters hurling fireballs, one character who actually swallows her enemies whole, and another who is able to hang in mid air, and bicycle kick his way across the screen. What's that all about, eh? Suspension of disbelief, that's what, and this lack of regard for conventional wisdom may well be a good thing, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, scientific knowledge is a rather convenient cover-all explanation for what we see as the world around us. And secondly, most fighting games wouldn't half as much fun without the range of spectacular special moves and throws that characters invariably have. And then where would we be? It'd be the end of the world as we know it. The on-line help gives you a potted history of each fighter, and their part in the previous tournament. The tournament has apparently been arranged by some big shadowy mega corporation, with some hidden nefarious purpose behind it. Plus, there are now character endings so you stand a chance of finding out what on earth is going on. Then again Toshinden 2 was programmed in Japan, so the supposed reason behind the tournament just turn out to be completely weird and nonsensical. There's only one way to find out.. There are eleven initially selectable fighters to choose from, along with four other fighters who become playable when you prove your combat skills. Each fighter has a selection of moves, ranging from punches and kicks to huge fireballs and high-powered combo moves. The more powerful moves are, as is to be expected, harder to pull off, but they can still be performed using the keyboard. The fighters are all armed with a weapon such as a sword or a club, which is used in their attacks, although they can't drop it or break it. The award for Best Fighting Game Character Ever, as well as Least Fair Use of Weapons clearly has to go Vermillion, one of the hidden playable characters, who comes across as a cross between Caleb, the gun slinging anti-hero from Blood and The Crow from er.. The Crow. This bloke carries both a shotgun and a small pistol which do massive damage and can be used to take out an opponent on the other side of the arena. Furthermore, these weapons are his normal weapons - you don't need to trigger a special move to use them. You can just press the strong punch or weak punch buttons and he'll whip them out and start blasting - even the bosses have a job standing up to that. On top of the normal attacks and special moves, each character has a couple of super-special moves. One of these moves can only be activated when that character's overdrive bar is full, which fills up a little every time you lay into your opponent, and is usually a combination of several special moves strung together automatically. The other move each character can use is known as a 'desperation move' - when your character's energy bar is nearly empty, if you hit the correct combination of keypresses, your character will execute an very powerful move that, if your opponent gets caught by it, will knock a huge amount of energy off their bar. Which , in turn, could give them ability to pull off their desperation move. It's important that you master the moves in this game, if you want your character to survive - pulling off the same move again and again usually doesn't work. Similarly, if your opponent keeps trying to fireball you into submission, then you needn't worry, because Toshinden 2> has an added third dimension which you can use to dodge attacks. Toshinden 2 is a 3D beat-em-up, a little like Virtua Fighter and Last Bronx, but more like Tekken since in Virtua Fighter and Last Bronx, you can't use the 3D arenas to your advantage. In Toshinden and Toshinden 2, on the other hand, you can use the 'roll' keys to move in and out, as well as left, and right and up and down. So not only can you dodge fireballs by hopping out of their flight path, you can also attack your opponent from the side. The '3D' movement is something you really need to get to grips with, otherwise your opponent will use it to their advantage and walk all over you. There are two extra keys to move in 3D, but you should get the hang of it fairly quickly.
